, Manitoba

Pinawa was originally known by Aboriginal peoples as “pinnowok” meaning “calm waters”, referring to a bypass from the raging waters at Seven Sisters, where the initial settlement or “old” Pinawa was located. The “new” Pinawa located in the Eastman Region, one of Manitoba’s first planned communities, was developed in the early 1960s on the north bank of the historic Winnipeg River at the entrance to Lake Sylvia.Based on the 2006 census data, 1450 people live in Pinawa. One quarter of the population (25 percent) is age 65 years old and over, with a median age of 53.5 years. Pinawa joined the Age-Friendly Manitoba Initiative in February 2008 (first round).
